Microsoft Knows How to Impress Hardcore Gamers!
At the Game Developer Conference 2016 in San Francisco, Microsoft hired a bunch of women dressed in school girls uniform to shake it down for the people in attendance. All the men got a stiffy and an eye full. This is not something we’d expect out of the Microsoft playbook.
Hiring borderline strippers does create publicity and in a time when the PlayStation 4 is taking over the gaming market – it can be seen as a way of being the cooler kid on the block. “Hey, Xbox is so much more hardcore than PlayStation. Checkout the Game Developer Conference” as the kids would be expected say to their friends at school.
Some women decided to go on a rampage against Microsoft promoting beautiful women in line with the wild advertising strategy. I do see how it could be seen as sexism depending on your outlook.
@Spacekatgal said on Twitter:
“Our industry treats women terribly. And when @Microsoft has a frathouse atmosphere – it’s just reinforcing some very damaging standards.”
Then we got word from Phil Spencer who is the head of the Xbox devision. Phil Spencer was essentially repulsed with the school girl style strippers at the event:
“It has come to my attention that at Xbox-hosted events at GDC this past week, we represented Xbox and Microsoft in a way that was absolutely not consistent or aligned to our values.”
I believe Microsoft did this as a stunt to gain press. The women dancing would have to be signed off by someone in authority. It isn’t like no one at Microsoft or Xbox knew people had been dancing on tables at the Game Developer Conference.
It is just skin and games. Get over it!
